Sam Marquis: Finding Inspiration in Fashion History

On Thursday, November 3, 2011, Celebration Fashion Show was graced with the presence and designs of Sam Marquis. With ten years of designing experience, she constructs each of her collections from various inspirations ranging from the message and statement she wants to convey – whether it is gloomy and edgy or bright and fun. As fashion history is her passion and joy, she draws inspiration from researching trends and fashions in different time periods and cultures.

Currently, her Spring/Summer 2012 collection, titled “Diaspora” is inspired by the people and culture of Tibet. Both, historically and presently, Tibet has struggled through many tragedies, but the beauty in their people and culture is in their smiling faces. Through her Spring/Summer 2012 “Diaspora” collection, she hopes to capture both facets of their lives: the positive outlook and happiness they have in spite of their losses.

Without a doubt, Sam’s designs and inspirations illustrate the craft in transforming her ideas and concepts into fashionable statements. As an emerging designer in the fashion industry – one that is difficult to penetrate – she has always lived by her constant desire to learn, her unfailing love for fashion, and her fearless nature of not being afraid to fail and take risks.

In pursuing a career in fashion, the two advice that is most commonly given is have passion and perseverance. In addition to this, we asked Sam for any advice and/or parting words for our readers to take away. Her response was, “The most important advice I could give is to stick with it! It seems so easy but there are a lot of people who believe that fashion design isn’t a practical career choice. Do what makes you happy with passion and to the best of your ability and success will follow! Try to take classes and go to workshops to get some basic skills down, and sew, sew, sew! Also, go to your local library, you’d be surprised by the great fashion and sewing books they have!”
